Photography

I have been a photographer for many years.

As a photographer I use the medium to capture and document the beauty of the human condition, those moments when the subject’s countenance expresses the energy of a particular event or experience.

My work has spanned two different periods. The first (1975-1987) was with film using a Mamiya/Sekor 35-millimeter camera; the second (1998-present) has been with digital images using a Canon Rebel 35-millimeter camera.

The Magic of Music and Movement (March 1, 2024 – April 30, 2024)

Lexington Community Center, Lexington, MA

The experience of music and dance occurs in the moment of performance. The many elements that come together to create that moment will never be present in the exact proportions or relationships again. But in the moment the energy that is created is magical. When human beings engage in music, either by playing it or moving to it, there is a transformation that takes place in them. As people become conduits for the energy of emotion, vehicles for the expression of music, they are, if only for the briefest of moments, focused, enlivened, uplifted, sometimes enraptured, and always transformed. The photographs in this collection evoke those magical moments that occur in performances.

Home of the Heart: Photographs of Senegal (November 2019 – January 2020)

Suffolk University Gallery, Boston, MA

What is home? Home is not only defined by where we are born, or where we live. Home is also a place that touches us deeply, that resonates with our being. This collection of photographs taken in Senegal, West Africa by Robert Bellinger and Kenneth Martin illustrate the connection they both have to Senegal, a home of the heart.

Simply being who we are . . . (January – February 2019)

Cary Memorial Library, Lexington, MA

The title for this collection of photographs is taken from poet activist Felipe Luciano who said: “simply being who we are is magnificent.” The portraits in this collection are not posed portraits. They were each taken in the moment, capturing each person simply being who they are, paying little or no attention to the camera. In a few, the camera shutter was released at the exact moment when the subject became aware of or looked into the camera, giving the appearance of a posed portrait.

These photographs capture the elegance, strength and beauty of each subject, whether they are working, playing, enjoying an exciting event or lost in a moment of reverie . . . people just simply being who they are. Through the various portraits the viewer will recognize the beauty inherent in each of our daily lives and the commonality within the diversity of the human experience.
